8 Things to Do in Glücksburg – What Visitors Actually Do

Glücksburg on the Flensburg Fjord offers visitors far more than a beach holiday – from Glücksburg Castle, the most visited local attraction, to the Fördesteig coastal trail and day trips to Denmark just 25 kilometres away. Most activities are accessible without a car or easily combined with a bike ride.

1

Visit Schloss Glücksburg

The water palace of Schloss Glücksburg is considered one of the most significant Renaissance castles in Northern Europe and is open year-round. It is located directly on the Schlossee, just a short walk from the town center. The castle pond offers a unique view of the white building standing on an island. It is rated 4.4 out of 5 on TripAdvisor.

2

Hike the Fördesteig

The Fördesteig is a certified hiking trail that runs along the Flensburger Förde. It leads through forests, over steep coastal sections, and through small fishing villages. Partial sections start directly in or near Glücksburg and are suitable for day trips – without having to traverse the entire trail.

3

Swim at the Flensburger Förde

Glücksburg has a public bathing beach right in the town. The water of the Flensburger Förde is brackish water with a lower salt content than the open Baltic Sea. In high summer, water temperatures typically range between 17 and 21 degrees Celsius. The beach is shallow and therefore also suitable for families with children.

4

Bike tour along the Förde

From Glücksburg, signposted cycle paths lead along the Förde shores both towards Flensburg and towards Holnis. The route to Flensburg is about 15 kilometers long and runs mostly on quiet coastal paths. Bikes can be rented at the Intermar Hotel.

5

Day trip to Denmark

The Danish border is about 25 kilometers from Glücksburg. Cities like Sønderborg or Åbenrå are reachable by car in 30 to 40 minutes. Sønderborg, with the Dybbøl Mill and Sønderborg Castle, is a worthwhile day trip destination. The border region is also accessible by public transport via Flensburg.

6

Explore the Holnis Peninsula

Holnis is the northernmost point of Schleswig-Holstein and is located about twelve kilometers from Glücksburg. The peninsula offers beach sections, nature reserves, and a lighthouse. It is easily accessible by bike or car and offers quieter conditions than the main beach in Glücksburg.

7

Flensburg and the Förde-Speicherstadt

Flensburg is about 15 kilometers from Glücksburg and can be reached by bus or bike. The historic Speicherstadt at the Flensburg harbor houses museums, cafés, and the Rum-Speicher – a regional cultural heritage from the trading era. The Flensburg harbor itself is a popular starting point for boat tours on the Förde.

8

Wellness and Sauna at the Intermar

The Intermar Hotel in Glücksburg has a sauna area. Guests can combine wellness and activities directly – after a long bike ride or a day at the beach, the sauna is a standard offering for many Förde vacationers. Details on opening hours and usage can be obtained at the reception.
