7 Hidden Gems in Glücksburg – Off the Beaten Track

Glücksburg on the Flensburg Fjord is more than a castle and a seafront promenade. Look a little closer and you find quiet sandy beaches, secluded peninsulas and a Danish-German border culture that makes the town genuinely distinctive. These seven tips are known to few visitors.

1

Kurstrand Sandwig

About two kilometers from Glücksburg lies Sandwig, home to one of the Flensburger Förde's quietest sandy beaches. No beach chairs, no snack bars – just fine sand, a view of the Danish coast, and clear Baltic Sea water. Ideal for early morning walks or a quiet afternoon away from the town's hustle and bustle.

2

Holnis Peninsula

Germany's northeasternmost mainland is just a short bike ride or car journey from Glücksburg. From the cliff edge, you can see the Danish islands of Als and Ærø. The nature reserve is a breeding ground for water and coastal birds – binoculars recommended.

3

Glücksburg Castle from the Water Side

The 16th-century water palace looks completely different from the shore of the castle pond than it does in the usual postcards. A short walk around the pond (free, accessible at any time) is particularly worthwhile in the morning or evening light when there are hardly any visitors.

4

Ferry Connection Glücksburg – Danish Coast

The Flensburger Förde can be crossed with small ferries that connect Glücksburg and the region with Danish ports. A day trip to the Danish Sønderborg or Aabenraa is possible without a car – a frequently overlooked advantage of the border location.

5

German-Danish Border Culture in Flensburg

Flensburg is only 15 kilometers from Glücksburg and boasts an active bilingual culture: Danish schools, Danish clubs, Danish supermarkets. A half-day trip with a visit to the market in the Flensburg harbor district shows how close two countries can be.

6

Angeln – the Quiet Hinterland

The Angeln peninsula south of the fjord is largely undiscovered: Knicks (the typical Schleswig-Holstein hedgerows), Romanesque fieldstone churches, and hardly any tourist traffic. A trip into the Angelner countryside with the destination of Kappeln on the Schlei makes it clear how much quiet landscape the region has to offer.

7

Förde Bathing Spots Away from the Main Beach

In addition to the central spa area, there are several smaller, officially designated bathing spots along the Flensburger Förde that are rarely frequented even in high summer. The water temperature of the fjord often rises faster in summer due to its sheltered location than on the open Baltic Sea coast.
