When Glücksburg awakens in May, one of the most beautiful times to travel on the German Baltic coast begins. The days grow long, the fjord glitters, water temperatures rise above 12 degrees, and the beach chairs are set up. 1. Fjord walk from the hotel to Glücksburg Castle
From the Intermar Hotel, the fjord trail leads in around 25 minutes directly to Glücksburg Water Castle – one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in northern Germany. In May the castle park is in full bloom; admission to the museum costs €9. Tip: set off early, take a café break in the castle courtyard, then return by local bus.
2. Start of the beach season at Glücksburg beach
From 1 May, the lifeguard station at Glücksburg beach opens, the beach chairs are rented out, and the beach café is open daily. If you dare: the first swim in May is part of the local tradition.
3. Asparagus season at the Restaurant Intermar
From early May our kitchen serves the first spears from Schleswig-Holstein – usually from the Hennstedt farm in the Plön district. On the menu: classic asparagus with potatoes and hollandaise sauce, asparagus risotto with North Sea shrimp, fried asparagus with rack of lamb. Reserve a table online via the website.
4. Holstein Day on Whit Sunday
Whitsun 2026 falls on 24/25 May. Glücksburg celebrates with open-air concerts at the harbour, an arts and crafts market and a harbour festival. At the hotel we offer Whitsun packages with two nights and a sparkling-wine reception.
5. Guided fjord boat trip
The MS Rosa departs from Wassersleben three times a day towards Sønderborg (DK) and back. Spring trips from €18 per person, children half price. It is a 12-minute drive from the hotel.
6. Sauna with fjord views
In the wellness area of the Intermar Hotel, the evening sauna infusions with fjord salt and birch scent run from May – every Wednesday and Friday at 6 pm. Included for house guests; external day visitors pay €32 (sauna + admission to the Fördeland spa).
7. Bike tour to the Geltinger Birk
The Geltinger Birk can be reached by bike in 45 minutes (e-bike rental at reception, €18/day). In May, sea eagles and cranes breed here and wild horses graze at the edge of the salt marshes. Picnic tip: take some sandwiches from the Restaurant Intermar with you.
