Glücksburg in Autumn: Why the Off-Season on the Flensburg Fjord Is Underrated

The Flensburg Fjord is at its most tranquil in autumn: empty beaches, golden light on the water, and far fewer visitors than in summer. Travelling to Glücksburg between September and November means a full programme on the Baltic coast without the high-season crowds. The Apple Festival on 27 September 2025 is just one of several autumn highlights.

Autumn on the Fjord – what the numbers show

October on the Flensburg Fjord sees on average one fewer rainy day than July. That may sound like a footnote, but for anyone who enjoys quiet coastal walks or cycling along the shore, it makes a real difference. Add to that: the beaches between Glücksburg and Holnis are almost deserted in autumn, restaurants have free tables, and the paths around Glücksburg Castle see manageable crowds.

Glücksburg Apple Festival – 27 September 2025

The Glücksburg Apple Festival is a local market featuring direct producers from Schleswig-Holstein, heritage apple varieties from the region, and a programme for families. It traditionally takes place in the town centre and draws visitors from Flensburg, the Angeln district, and the Danish border region. Arriving this weekend gives you a side of Glücksburg that high-season tourists rarely see.

Glücksburg Castle: fewer visitors, same history

Glücksburg Water Castle, built from 1582 onwards, is the best-preserved Renaissance castle in northern Europe. It stands roughly 800 metres from the Intermar Hotel and is open from May to October. Visitor numbers in September and October are significantly lower than in the main season – the exhibitions can be explored at leisure, without queues.

Hiking and cycling without the crowds

The Baltic Sea Coastal Cycling Route runs from Flensburg via Glücksburg to Travemünde, covering around 430 kilometres in total. Those planning day stages will find the stretch between Glücksburg and the Holnis nature reserve particularly varied: steep banks, fjord views, and quiet forest paths alternate throughout. In autumn, the foliage colours along this route are a travel destination in their own right.

  • Holnis Peninsula: steep coast with views into Denmark, rarely crowded outside school holidays
  • Coastal loop from Glücksburg: flat shoreline route heading out of town, manageable on a hire bike
  • Forests behind Glücksburg: mixed beech woodland – especially rewarding in October

Day trip to Denmark: just around the corner

Denmark's border is barely 30 kilometres from Glücksburg, and the fjord points straight north. The villages of Møgeltønder and Tønder on the Danish side – with Schackenborg Castle and Tønder's historic town centre – make for a half-day trip that works just as well in autumn. Low season on the Danish side often means open cafés with no wait and quiet museums.

Why the Intermar is a different hotel in autumn

In summer the Intermar Hotel is frequently fully booked, and the Gudlak and Glückselig restaurants are busy. In autumn the pace changes: breakfast is calmer, the terrace overlooking the fjord is a special place on cool mornings, and guests booking an apartment can use their own kitchen – convenient for longer stays outside the high season. The sauna in the wellness area gains extra appeal in the cooler months.

What autumn guests can plan

  • Glücksburg Apple Festival: 27 September 2025
  • Glücksburg Castle: open until end of October – check closing dates directly with the castle
  • Baltic Coastal Cycling Route, Flensburg–Glücksburg–Holnis stage: approx. 20–25 km depending on route
  • Day trip to Tønder/Møgeltønder: approx. 30 km from Glücksburg

In short: autumn on the Flensburg Fjord is not a compromise compared to summer. It is a different way of discovering this stretch of coast – quieter, more honest, and with moments that are simply not available in August.
