Cycling Holiday on the Flensburg Fjord – Glücksburg as Your Perfect Base

Glücksburg sits directly on the Baltic Sea Cycle Route and gives cyclists easy access to Flensburg, the Holnis Peninsula and even Denmark. Intermar Hotel & Apartments is an ideal base for day trips and multi-day cycling tours along the Flensburg Fjord.

Why Glücksburg Is Ideal for Cyclists

Glücksburg sits at the southern end of the Flensburg Fjord, placing it at the heart of one of Schleswig-Holstein's most varied cycling regions. The town is a junction between the Baltic Sea Cycle Route (EuroVelo 10) and the regional fjord trail, linking coastline, forest and the German-Danish border area. Staying here puts everything within reach: flat stages along the water, hilly stretches inland and the Danish border less than 30 kilometres away.

Key Routes from Glücksburg

  • Baltic Sea Cycle Route (EuroVelo 10): This long-distance route runs through the Flensburg Fjord, connecting Glücksburg with Flensburg to the west and the Danish east coast to the north. Stages can easily be broken into day rides.
  • Holnis Peninsula (approx. 25 km loop): This unspoilt peninsula is the north-easternmost point of mainland Germany. The route winds through hedgerows and rapeseed fields, finishing at a cliff with views across to the Danish islands – flat and suitable for families.
  • Glücksburg to Flensburg along the fjord (approx. 15 km): One of the most scenic coastal rides in the region, running via Sandwig and Kupfermühle right along the water. The return trip is easy by regional bus.
  • Cross-border ride into Denmark (from approx. 30 km): Via Kruså you cross into Denmark and can continue along the Sønderjylland cycle network. A full day's riding takes you as far as Aabenraa or Sønderborg.

Terrain and Difficulty

The fjord region is mostly hilly, particularly inland between Glücksburg and Angeln. Coastal routes such as the path to Holnis or towards Flensburg are suitable for less experienced riders. E-bikes make even the hillier sections effortless. Paved cycle paths follow the main routes; off these, short stretches of quiet country road are occasionally used.

Practical Tips for Cycling Guests

  • Bicycles can be hired locally – check the Intermar website or ask at reception for current options.
  • Luggage storage is available, so you can head out light.
  • Flensburg railway station is the most convenient arrival point for cyclists travelling by train; it is about 15 km from Glücksburg.
  • Schleswig-Holstein has been expanding its digital cycling network since 2025 – up-to-date maps and GPX tracks are available from the Schleswig-Holstein tourism board and on Komoot.

Best Time of Year for Cycling

May to September offers the most reliable weather. Early summer is particularly attractive, when rapeseed fields are in full bloom and the fjord shores are not yet crowded. September and October are also rewarding: quieter paths, comfortable temperatures and beautiful light for photographers.

Glücksburg as a Base – Not Just a Stopover

Many cycling tourists use Flensburg as their base and overlook Glücksburg. That is a mistake. The town has sandy beaches, the moated Glücksburg Castle and a calm atmosphere that feels genuinely restorative after a long day in the saddle. Intermar Hotel & Apartments is close to the water and offers both hotel rooms and self-catering apartments – practical for multi-day cyclists who appreciate having a kitchen to hand.
