Individual stages start directly in or near Glücksburg and are suitable as day hikes without completing the entire route. The Fördesteig holds a premium trail certification.
What cycling routes are there in Glücksburg and along the Flensburg Fjord?+
The Baltic Sea Coastal Cycling Route runs from Flensburg via Glücksburg to Travemünde, covering a total of around 430 kilometres. The day stage from Flensburg to Glücksburg and on to the Holnis Peninsula is approximately 20 to 25 kilometres depending on the route and is considered suitable for families due to its flat terrain. Bicycles can be hired at the Intermar Hotel. There are also shorter circular routes along the fjord that start directly from the hotel.
What is the Holnis Peninsula and how far is it from Glücksburg?+
The Holnis Peninsula is the north-easternmost point of mainland Germany, located in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg, approximately 10 kilometres north-east of Glücksburg. It is designated as a nature reserve and, at its cliff edge, offers a panoramic view over the Flensburg Fjord and the Danish islands of Als and Ærø. It can be reached by bicycle (approx. 25 km loop), by car or on foot along the coast. A visitor centre provides information on the local flora and fauna.
How far is Glücksburg from the Danish border?+
Glücksburg is located on the Flensburg Fjord in the northernmost part of Schleswig-Holstein and is less than 30 kilometres from the Danish border. By car, the first Danish villages such as Kruså and Padborg can be reached in roughly 20 to 25 minutes. The Intermar Hotel in Glücksburg therefore serves as a good base for day trips to Denmark, including Møgeltønder (approx. 32 km) and Tønder (approx. 35 km).

What is the Fördesteig and where does it run near Glücksburg?+
The Fördesteig is a long-distance walking trail that runs along the coast of the Flensburg Fjord. It leads from Glücksburg through Langballig and the fishing village of Langballigau, continuing around the Geltinger Birk, one of the largest spit peninsulas in Schleswig-Holstein. The route offers continuous coastal views and passes through several small villages and nature reserves. The starting point in Glücksburg is within walking distance of Intermar Hotel.
Which cycle routes start directly from Glücksburg on the Flensburg Fjord?+
Three main routes are accessible from Glücksburg: (1) The Baltic Sea Cycle Route EuroVelo 10 runs through the Flensburg Fjord, connecting Glücksburg with Flensburg (approx. 15 km) and the Danish east coast. (2) The loop to the Holnis Peninsula (approx. 25 km) leads to the north-easternmost point of mainland Germany. (3) For a cross-border ride into Denmark via Kruså, it is around 30 km from Glücksburg to the border, then onwards on the Danish Sønderjylland cycling network. Schleswig-Holstein has expanded its digital cycling network since 2025; GPX tracks are available via Komoot and the Schleswig-Holstein tourism board.
What is Glücksburg Castle and when was it built?+
Glücksburg Castle is a water castle in the town of the same name on the Flensburg Fjord and is considered the best-preserved Renaissance castle in northern Europe. Construction began in 1582 under Duke Johann the Younger. The castle stands on an island in an artificial lake and is open to visitors from May to October. From the Intermar Hotel, the castle is approximately a 10 to 15-minute walk (around 800 metres).
